The hop plant is a vigorous, climbing, herbaceous perennial, usually trained to grow up strings in a field called a hopfield. Many different types of hops are grown by fercially.armers around the world, with different types being used for particular styles of beer.
The hop is a small genus of flowering plants ,deep—rooted to the temperate Northern Hemisphere . It is found in most countries of the North temperate zone.Its a hardy, perennial herb which gives annual vines from a permanent crown. Vines may mature up to 25 feet in a single season but will die back to the crown each fall. Hops have separate male and female organs. Only the female produces the flowers that are used for brewing or medicinal purposes.The female blossoms, commonly known hops , are used as flavoring and stabilizers during beer brewing . Male plants have no market value, but are used to pollinate females.
Hop are used as an external remedy in combination, as a poultice, with chamomile flowers or poppy heads as a fomentation for swelling of a painful nature, inflammation, neuralgic and rheumatic pains, bruises, boils and gatherings. It ebbs pain and allays inflammation in a very short time.
Dried female buds have a mild sedative impact on the central nervous system . It is used as a tea too. Hops is used in the treatment for insomnia , stress and anxiety . Hop pillows give relaxation by working on the olfactory center and thus on the central nervous system through the limbic system.
Hops has been used with some success in the treatment of premature ejaculation. Recent scientific studies supporting the claims for its use in dysmenorrhoea and amenorrhoea as an anti—oxytocic property. Hops may also be used as a poultice. Its antibacterial qualities also stimulate gastric juice production.
Hop resins are made of two main acids includes alpha and beta acids. Alpha acids have a mild antibiotic effect against Gram—positive bacteria . Alcoholic extracts of hops show a strong spasmolytic property on smooth muscle and is efficacious in visceral tension such as in nervous dyspepsia, palpitations, nervous or irritable coughs, and asthma.
