Botanical Name (Acorus Calamus)
Aroma: Pungent, bitter, tangy
Used universally in herbal medicine, this herb is attributed with shamanic qualities in Native American folk medicine. The rhizome has an intensely aromatic fragrance and a tangy, pungent and bitter taste. In Ayurveda Calamus is considered an aromatic, bitter tonic which stimulates appetite and digestion and is a nervine sedative.
In contemporary medicine it has spasmolytic, carminative and sedative effects, in addition to being externally a stimulant, aromatic, expectorant that is antispasmodic and a powerful nervine sedative. The rhizome has an expectorant action commonly found in the essential oil. In the form of infusion through aromatherapy it is tonic, stomachic or carminative, also anti—periodic. Helpful for angina, arthritis, asthma, diarrhea, colds, colic pain, cough, dyspepsia, epilepsy, fever, flatulence, and gastritis. This herb can be used to make teas, or added to smoking blends.
Note: Although remedial, people with major health ailments like cancer, or epilepsy should avoid use. Non—toxic, non—irritant, possible sensitization in some individuals. Not to be used while pregnant. Moderately toxic, use in small amounts, can cause skin irritation, can be a mucous membrane irritant.
