The health benefits of bergamot have been documented for centuries. Many of these benefits can be attributed to bergamot's antioxidants. Bergamot essential oil reduces anxiety which has a calming effect on the central nervous system. Cholesterol—lowering properties of bergamot are also well known, Bergamot reduces total cholesterol, LDL —— the bad cholesterol, blood sugar and increased HDL —— the good cholesterol, in patients with elevated cholesterol who consumed bergamot extract for 30 days. Additionally, bergamot inhibits the enzymes which promotes cholesterol synthesis, and lowered blood pressure by increasing blood vessel dilation.
Researchers have found that bergamot has an opiate—like effect when they blocked an opiate receptor in the tests, which significantly decreased the pain—relieving effects of the bergamot extract.
Anti—cancer effects of bergamot were discovered in studies because Bergamot scavenged free radicals without adverse toxic effects. Bergamot protects brain neurons from oxygen deprivation, improves nerve transmission and reduces pain levels.
